Cover Letter & Work-Proof Guide: Skip the Fluff and Show the Work
Nobody wants to read four paragraphs of "I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest." Show them 150 words of proof.
Let's be honest about cover letters: 90% of traditional four-paragraph cover letters are never read, because 90% of them say the exact same thing. They open with "I am thrilled to apply for...", repeat the resume in long sentences, and close with "I am a detail-oriented team player."
When a hiring manager does read a cover note—or the "Why do you want to work here?" box on an application form—they are looking for one thing: evidence that you understand their problem and have already solved something just like it. Here is how to write a 150-word Bashmo Proof Note in five minutes flat.
1. When to Write a Cover Note (And When to Skip It)
Do not spend 45 minutes writing custom essays for low-fit job-board clicks. Save your writing energy for where it actually moves the needle:
| Application Scenario | What to Submit |
|---|---|
| "Easy Apply" / Required Upload on Large ATS Portal | A tight, 150-word Bashmo Proof Note (takes 4 minutes to tailor using your top 2 stories) |
| Application Form With a "Why Us / Anything Else?" Text Box | Paste the 3-bullet proof section directly into the text box—hiring managers read plain-text form fields far more often than PDF attachments |
| Top-5 Dream Role or Career-Switcher Application | Attach a Proof Note + 60-Day Approach Brief (showing how you would tackle their #1 JD priority) and send it directly to the hiring manager |
2. The 150-Word Bashmo Proof Note Structure
Throw away the formal letter header and the three paragraphs of flattery. Use the Bashmo rubric (Structure, Specificity, Impact, Ownership) to write a clean 150-word note:
- Line 1 — The Direct Hook (25 words): Name the exact role and the #1 operational priority in their job description.
- Middle — Two Bashmo Proof Bullets (90 words): Pick the two strongest stories from your Bashmo practice plan that match their requirements. State what you did and the exact number that changed.
- Closing — The Bridge (35 words): One sentence on why their team's stage or mission fits what you want to build next.

| "Dear Hiring Manager, I am writing to express my strong interest in the Technical Project Manager position at Acme Health. With over six years of experience managing complex projects and working closely with cross-functional stakeholders, I am confident that my communication skills, attention to detail, and passion for healthcare technology make me an ideal candidate for your organization..." | "Hi Acme Health team — I'm applying for the Technical Project Manager role because your JD centers on scaling multi-clinic EHR onboarding without adding implementation headcount. Two recent projects from my work directly match that challenge: • Cut clinic go-live time from 6 weeks to 3.5 weeks: At HealthFlow, I redesigned our onboarding sequence across 24 regional clinics by moving admin configuration into a self-paced sandbox and reserving live PM hours for data migration. • Shipped a 14-week ERP rollout on time after losing 2 seats: Re-sequenced Phase-1 reporting scope for 220 finance users, launching on schedule with zero payroll disruption. I'd welcome the chance to bring that same execution discipline to Acme's Q1 hospital rollout." |

3. Copy-Ready Proof Bullets Across Six Fields
When an application asks "Why are you a strong fit for this role?", drop in two concrete proof bullets tailored to your field:
| Field | Example Proof Note Hook + Bullet |
|---|---|
| Nurse | "I'm applying for the Night Charge RN role on 4-West because I specialize in high-acuity telemetry workflows and new-grad precepting. On my current 28-bed unit, I standardized our SBAR shift-change read-backs—cutting medication documentation near-misses from 6 per month to 1 over two quarters—and precepted 7 new BSN graduates to independent floor readiness." |
| Teacher | "I'm applying for the 8th-Grade Algebra position at Oakridge Middle because closing post-pandemic math gaps through data-driven small groups is the core of my classroom practice. Over the last school year (115 students across 4 sections), I rebuilt our weekly exit-ticket intervention blocks and raised district benchmark proficiency from 54% to 78%." |
| Sales | "I'm applying for the Mid-Market Healthcare AE role because my best quarters have come from turning around stalled hospital deals. In Q3, I re-engaged 34 dormant mid-market pipeline accounts using a 30-day scoped ROI pilot, closing $410K in net-new ARR and finishing the quarter at 118% of quota." |
| Customer Support | "I'm applying for the Senior Technical Support Specialist role because your team is scaling Tier-2 API and billing triage. At my last company (1,400 weekly tickets), I audited our top repeating escalations, built 12 self-service macros, and partnered with engineering on two root-cause billing fixes—cutting peak first-response times from 9 hours to 45 minutes." |
| Project Manager | "I'm applying for the Senior Implementation PM role because I've spent the last four years rescuing tight-timeline enterprise rollouts. Most recently, I led a 14-week finance migration for 220 users after losing two contractor seats, trimming non-critical reporting scope to hit our go-live date with zero downtime." |
| Engineer | "I'm applying for the Senior Backend Engineer role on the Checkout team because my focus is high-throughput payment reliability in Go and Python. Last year, I replaced synchronous webhook retries with an idempotent dead-letter queue, eliminating 75% of weekly on-call pages and keeping p99 checkout latency under 180ms during Black Friday peak traffic." |
4. The "Work-Proof" Upgrade for Competitive Roles
If you are applying to a competitive role where 300 other people have similar resumes—or you are switching careers—add a short "How I Would Approach Your First 60 Days" block at the bottom of your note:
- Days 1–30 (Audit & Listen): Name the specific queue, codebase, curriculum, or unit workflow you would shadow first and the baseline metric you would map.
- Days 31–60 (First Quick Win): Name one concrete, low-risk improvement you have executed before (like standardizing a handoff checklist, fixing a top-3 support macro, or tightening a flaky test suite) that proves you understand how work actually gets done.
- Sync With Your Bashmo Plan: Upload that exact resume and job description into Bashmo so when your proof note earns the interview invite, you have already practiced the 20 deep-dive questions behind it.
